Going To
The Theatre
Don't Be Late, Use Polite Language, Stay
in Your Seats - - these are just a few of the many theater etiquette
rules that participants learn. This multimedia, interactive program
is offered at no cost to public elementary and middle schools throughout
the Denver/Boulder area. The goals are to teach youth proper theater
etiquette, to encourage all students (particularly those from at-risk
and limited income backgrounds) to attend live theater, and to also
encourage students' families to become a volunteer usher with the
organization. Engaging, interactive, age-appropriate teaching sessions
(K - 2nd grade; 3rd - 5th, 6th -8th) are offered in conjunction
with a professionally developed DVD. This DVD includes excerpts
from different stage performances and is designed to teach different
concepts to students, while also getting them excited about attending
live theater.
The music teachers, who are instrumental
to the program's implementation, help us coordinate Going to the
Theatre presentations that are held during grade appropriate assemblies
throughout the school year. Participating schools are required to
bring a theater production to their school or make arrangements
for students to attend a play in the community, within the month.
Schools are currently being identified and the program will be piloted
May through August, and then fully launched soon thereafter. We
are also working with ArtReach and Young Audiences to help schools
schedule theater performances at their schools, which will allow
schools to fulfill the program's requirement of attending live theater.
This program has a three-year cycle, with the theater etiquette
assembly program offered in the first year, and a follow up curriculum
offered in years two and three to further reinforce the program's
objectives. After three years, Colorado Ushers returns to the school
to once again offer the hands on assemblies.
